A witness saw Brian Laundrie, 23, of North Port, Florida, United States and Gabrielle “Gabby” Petito, 22, of Blue Point, New York, USA fighting near Moonflower Community Cooperative in Moab, Utah, USA on August 12, 2021. The witness, a man named Chris, called 911.
“We drove by and the gentleman was slapping the girl,” the caller said of Laundrie and Petito. “Then we stopped. They ran up and down the sidewalk. He proceeded to hit her, hopped in the car and they drove off.”
In a handwritten sworn statement obtained by CNN, Chris said it appeared that Laundrie and Petito were arguing over control of her phone. Chris wrote, “At one point, she was punching him in the arm and/or face and trying to get into the van.”
Later that day, Moab City Police Department officers located Laundrie and Petito’s white 2012 Ford Transit van, pulled it over and immediately separated the two. For more than 1 hour, the couple explained the details of the their altercation earlier that day, which he said started when he climbed into their van with dirty feet.
Both Laundrie and Petito told the officers they had obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). No arrest was made and the couple agreed to separate for the night.
Petito and Laundrie were reported missing on September 11, 2021 and on September 17, 2021, respectively. On September 19, 2021, she was found deceased at the Spread Creek Dispersed Camping Area in the Bridger-Teton National Forest on the east boundary of Grand Teton National Park in Teton County, Wyoming, USA.
Before the public learned the identity of the man who witnessed Laundrie and Petito’s fight on August 12, 2021, there was a theory that the witness could be either Crystal Michelle Turner, 38, of Hot Springs, Arkansas, USA or Kylen Carrol Schulte, 24, of Vail, Colorado, USA. Schulte moved to Moab on January 27, 2016, started working for the Moonflower Community Cooperative in 2018 and started dating Turner on March 13, 2019.
In April 2021, Turner and Schulte got married. They turned their van into a camper and frequently camped out in the Utah mountains.
When Schulte and Turner were at Woody’s Tavern in Moab, where they were semi-regular customers, on August 13, 2021, they reportedly told their friends that there was a creep staying next to them. On August 14, 2021, the couple went missing.
On August 18, 2021, Schulte and Turner were found dead in the La Sal Mountains, the second highest range in Utah. Authorities later determined that the murders are not linked to Petito’s disappearance.
The killer or killers of Schulte and Turner is or are still unknown. Laundrie is still missing.
