Who is the incumbent mayor of Buffalo?

Byron William Brown II is the 62nd and incumbent mayor of Buffalo. He assumed office on January 1, 2006, making him the city’s first African-American mayor.

Born and raised in Queens, New York, Brown is the first African-American politician elected to the New York State Senate to represent a district outside New York City. He was a member of the Buffalo Common Council from the Masten district from January 1, 1996 to January 1, 2001.

Brown was a member of the New York Senate from the 57th district from January 1, 2011 to January 8, 2003 and from the 60th district from January 8, 2003 to December 31, 2005. He was reelected as the Buffalo mayor in 2009, 2013 and in 2017.

From May 23, 2016 to January 14, 2019, Brown was the chair of the New York Democratic Party. He ran as a write-in candidate during the general election for Buffalo mayor after losing to India Walton during the primary election.
