Ben Walsh

Benjamin “Ben” Walsh is the 54th and incumbent mayor of Syracuse. He assumed office on January 1, 2018.

Born and raised in Syracuse, Walsh graduated from Westhill High School in Syracuse in 1997. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York and his master’s degree in public administration from Syracuse University in Syracuse.

Walsh is the first independent mayor of Syracuse. He is the city’s second mayor without major party support following Louis Will, who was elected in 1913.

Khalid Bey

Born in Syracuse, Bey graduated from Nottingham High School in Syracuse. On June 30, 2009, BookSurge Publishing published his book “The Africa American Dilemma”.

In 2011, Bey won the Syracuse Common Council’s fourth district seat. As the democratic candidate, he received 1,154 votes and defeated his Green Party opponent Howie Hawkins, who received 1,072.

In June 2021, Bey became the first African-American man to win the Democratic or Republican nomination for mayor in Syracuse. He defeated Michael Greene.

Janet Burman

In 2018, Burman ran against Democratic candidate Rachel May for the 53rd district of the New York State Senate. The latter won.

Since 2018, Burman has been leading the Republican Women of Central New York and working as a district administrator on the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board. She spent almost four decades operating in the private sector, state government and community groups.

In June 2021, Burman won the Republican Party primary for Syracuse mayor. She received 499 votes while her opponent Thomas Babilon, who was endorsed by the Libertarian Party, received 235 votes.
