The republic of Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe. Composed of nine federated states, the country is bordered by the Czech Republic to the north, Germany to the northwest, Slovakia to the northeast, Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west, Hungary to the east and Slovenia and Italy to the south.

German is the official language of Austria. Among its recognized languages are Burgenland, Croatian, Hungarian and Slovene.

In 1995, Austria became a member of the United Nations. In 1999, the country adopted the euro currency.
