The Republic of Finland is a Nordic country in Northern Europe. The country shares land borders with Norway to the north, Russia to the east and Sweden to the west.

In 1809, Finland was annexed by Russia as the autonomous Grand Duchy of Finland. Finland declared its independence from Russia on December 6, 1917 and was admitted to the United Nations on December 14, 1955.

Sauli Niinistö, 73, is the incumbent and 12th president of Finland. He assumed office on March 1, 2012 and was reelected on January 28, 2018.
