Kwak Yoon-gy (곽윤기), 32, and Kim A-lang (김아랑), 26, are two of the 64 athletes representing South Korea at the 2022 Winter Olympics. Hosted by Beijing, China, the international winter multisport event will be held from February 4-20, 2022.

Including China and South Korea, there are 91 countries and territories participating in the event. At the 128th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in July 2015, Beijing was elected as the event’s host city, marking the first time the Winter Olympics is held in China.

On February 4, 2022, the opening ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics was held at Beijing National Stadium in Beijing. The final seven torchbearers mounted the torch itself into the center of a stylized snowflake that was constructed from placards bearing the names of the delegations competing in the event.

Kwak and Kim served as South Korea’s flagbearers during the opening ceremony. The former will compete in short track speed skating, particularly in men’s 5000m relay, and the latter will also compete in short track speed skating, particularly in women’s 3000m relay and mixed team relay.

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Kwak studied sport and recreation studies at Yonsei University in Seoul. He was the champion of the 2012 World Short Track Speed Skating Championships, which was held in Shanghai, China.

Kim, who was born in Jeonju, South Korea, was part of her home country’s short track speed skating team in the 3000m relay that won gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She also won gold in the relay at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Gangwon, South Korea.

Including Kwak, Kim and 62 other South Korean athletes, a total of 2,871 athletes will compete in 109 events in seven sports. The events will be held not only in Beijing but also in other parts of China including Yanqing and Chongli.

Beijing is the largest city to host the Winter Olympics. It is also the first city to have hosted both the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics.
