Syracuse, New York’s Brandon Rolfe accused of shooting Sudanese men Akok Lual, Lual Lual


Brandon L. Rolfe, 23, of Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, United States is accused of shooting five people between Al’s Wine and Whiskey Lounge and DP Dough in Armory Square, Syracuse at around 12:14 a.m. on April 19, 2022. Among the victims were Sudanese brothers Akok P. Lual, 24, and Lual Lual, 22, both of Syracuse.

The other victims were Garang Amyek, 25, Acuil Ater, 24, and Shyquan Derby, 23. All five victims were subsequently transported by ambulance to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for emergency treatment of their injuries.

Akok succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. Lual, Amyek, Ater and Derby are still recovering from their injuries.


A native of Sudan, Akok moved to Syracuse in 2005 and he worked for Lowes in Syracuse as a sales associate. He was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minoa, Onondaga County.

Akok and Lual are Peter Lual and Mary Anyuon‘s sons. Peter and Anyuon have three more sons namely Thiep Lual, Aguer Lual and Dabb Lual and a daughter named Aluel Lual.


At around 11:30 a.m. on April 19, 2022, Rolfe surrendered without incident to the homicide unit detectives of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) at Syracuse Police Department at the Public Safety Building in Syracuse. He was booked into the Onondaga County Justice Center in Syracuse.

Rolfe was charged with one count each of murder in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and four counts of attempted murder in the second degree. He will be arraigned on April 20, 2022.
