Annabelle Mae Tate McDonnell, 21, of Misamis Oriental, Philippines almost won Miss Universe Philippines 2022. She competed against 30 other candidates.
Hosted by Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, Miss Universe 2016 Iris Mittenaere and Miss Universe 2017 Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters, the Miss Universe Philippines 2022 coronation night was held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on April 30, 2022. The ceremony featured performances by Filipino singers Bamboo Mañalac, Sam Concepcion, Francisco Martin, Arthur Nery, Morissette and JM Bales.
“What is your biggest insecurity and how do you address it?” was McDonnell’s question in the final question-and-answer portion. She answered, “My socioeconomic status has been one of the biggest insecurities I’ve had.”
“Seven years ago I was just a meager, marginalized orphan, starving and trying to make her way through,” McDonnell continued. “But now, you see me, when you see me, think about how I’ve worked hard and studied even harder to be here and to aspire to conquer the universe. Thank you so much.”
Reigning Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu served as a judge. Joining her in the judging panel were Francis Padua Papica, Tonee Co See, Margarita Gutierrez, Richelle Singson Michael, Sam Versoza, Lia Andrea Moss, RS Francisco, Jennifer Olay and Joshua Sorrentino.
Among the 31 candidates, McDonnell received the fourth highest score from the judges, making her the first runner-up. Maria Katrina Llegado, 24, of Taguig, Metro Manila ranked fifth, making her the second runner-up.
The top scorer was Silvia Celeste Rabimbi Cortesi, 24, of Pasay City, who was crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2022. She will represent the Philippines in the 71st edition of Miss Universe.
Michelle Daniela Marquez Dee, 26, of Makati City, Metro Manila ranked second while Pauline Cucharo Amelinckx, 26, of Bohol, Philippines ranked third. They were crowned Miss Universe Philippines Tourism 2022 and Miss Universe Philippines Charity 2022, respectively, which are both non-competing titles.
McDonnell is 5’9″ tall. She was born in the United Kingdom and raised in Iligan City, which is geographically located in Lanao del Norte, Philippines but governmentally independent from the province.
Among the first beauty pageant titles McDonnell won are Miss Iligan 2018 and Miss Lanao Del Norte 2019. In 2019, she entered De La Salle University’s College of St. Benilde in Manila, Metro Manila to pursue a bachelor’s degree in consular and diplomatic affairs.
“As an abandoned child, I never let tragedy define my destiny,” McDonnell said in her Miss Universe 2022 application video. “I needed to find my voice to survive and I also found that I could also use it to help others thrive.”
Representing Lanao del Norte, McDonnell was Miss Millennial Philippines 2019 second runner-up. She represented Naawan, Misamis Oriental when she won Miss Kuyamis 2022 at the Gingoog City Gymnasium in Gingoog, Misamis Oriental on January 13, 2022.
