Cotabato City is geographically located in Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines but the city is independent from the province. The city and the province are in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

On December 22, 1979, Cotabato City became a highly urbanized city. Established as a municipality on October 29, 1903, it became a city on June 20, 1959 and officially became a part of the BARMM on December 15, 2020.

Cotabato City has 37 barangays and a total land area of 176.0 square kilometers. Every December 19, the city celebrates the Shariff Kabunsuan Festival in honor of Shariff Mohammad Kabunsuan, an Arab missionary from Johor, Malaysia.

On August 8, 2021, Alexandra Salazar represented Cotabato City at Miss Philippines Earth 2021 and competed against 65 other candidates in a virtual coronation ceremony. She finished in the Top 20.
