Eastern Samar is one of the six provinces in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. The others are Biliran, Leyte, Samar, Northern Samar and Southern Leyte.

On June 19, 1965, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar became independent provinces. Both provinces used to be parts of Samar, which was founded on August 11, 1841.

Borongan is the capital of Eastern Samar and the only component city of the province. The province has 22 municipalities namely Arteche, Balangiga, Balangkayan, Can-avid, Dolores, General MacArthur, Giporlos, Guiuan, Hernani, Jipapad, Lawaan, Llorente, Maslog, Maydolong, Mercedes, Oras, Quinapondan, Salcedo, San Julian, San Policarpo, Sulat and Taft.

Born in Borongan, Gabrielle Camille Celada Basiano studied tourism at at the Asian Development Foundation College in Tacloban, Philippines. On May 19, 2018, she represented Tacloban at Miss Earth Philippines 2018, competed against 41 other candidates on May 19, 2018 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines and finished in the Top 18.

On July 11, 2021, Basiano represented Borongan at Binibining Pilipinas 2021 and competed against 33 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila. She ranked fifth and was named the first runner-up.
