Iloilo City is the only independent city in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. The city is geographically located in Iloilo, Philippines but independent from the province.
On December 22, 1979, Iloilo City became a highly urbanized city. The city has seven districts namely Arevalo, City Proper, Jaro, La Paz, Lapuz, Mandurriao and Molo, which collectively have 180 barangays.
Born in Molo, Geronimo “Jerry” Perez Treñas assumed office as the mayor of Iloilo City from June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2010 and the congressman of the city from June 20, 2010 to June 30, 2019. He has been the mayor of the city since June 30, 2019.

On August 8, 2021, Rocel Angelah Songano represented Iloilo City at Miss Philippines Earth 2021 and competed against 65 other candidates in a virtual coronation ceremony. She ranked third and was crowned Miss Philippines Water 2021.
