Lucena is the only independent city in the Calabarzon region of the Philippines. The region has five provinces namely Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Quezon and Rizal.
On February 11, 1947, Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation was established in Lucena. On July 1, 1991, the city was recognized as a highly urbanized city.

On April 30, 2022, Anjeanette Japor represented Lucena and Gracelle Nicole Distura represented Quezon at Miss Universe Philippines 2022 and competed against 29 other candidates at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. They were both unplaced.
