The Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines has six provinces namely Biliran, Leyte, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar and Southern Leyte. Samar is connected to Leyte via the San Juanico Bridge, which was constructed from 1969 to 1973.

Samar has two component cities namely Calbayog and Catbalogan and 24 municipalities namely Almagro, Basey, Calbiga, Daram, Gandara, Hinabangan, Jiabong, Marabut, Matuguinao, Motiong, Pagsanghan, Paranas, Pinabacdao, San Jorge, San Jose de Buan, San Sebastian, Santa Margarita, Santa Rita, Santo Niño, Tagapul-an, Talalora, Tarangnan, Villareal and Zumarraga. The capital of the province is Catbalogan.
On July 11, 2004, Raichelle Mae “Gigette” Pacquiao represented Samar at Mutya ng Pilipinas 2004 and competed against 37 other candidates at the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Theater of Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was fourth runner-up to Jedah Casabuela Hernandez of Laguna, Philippines.
On July 10, 2019, Maria Claire Dongon represented Catbalogan at Miss Philippines Earth 2019 and competed against 39 other candidates at The Cove of Okada Manila in Parañaque, Metro Manila. She was unplaced.
