Sulu is one of the 82 provinces in the Philippines. The province has 19 municipalities namely Banguingui, Hadji Panglima Tahil, Indanan, Jolo, Kalingalan Caluang, Lugus, Luuk, Maimbung, Omar, Panamao, Pandami, Panglima Estino, Pangutaran, Parang, Pata, Patikul, Siasi, Talipao and Tapul.

Born in Maimbung, Abdusakur “Sakur” Mahail Tan was a councilor in Jolo from 1981 to 1987, the congressman of the first district of Sulu from 1987 to 1992 and the vice governor of the province from June 2013 to May 2016.

Since June 30, 2019, Tan has been the governor of Sulu, a position he also held from 1996 to 2001 and from 2007 to 2013. He will turn 72 on July 13, 2022.

On May 9, 2022, Sulu elected its new congressmen, governor, vice governor and provincial board members. The province has two legislative districts.

Collectively, the 19 municipalities of Sulu have 410 barangays. Eight of these are in Jolo, the capital of the province.

Jolo is a volcanic island. It is the only municipality in Sulu that does not engage in seaweed farming.

Nur Shaira Ventura represented Sulu at Miss Millennial Philippines 2018, which aired on GMA Network as a segment of the show “Eat Bulaga” from August 25, 2018 to October 27, 2018. She competed against 39 other candidates and finished in the Top 10.
