Davao de Oro is one of the five provinces in the Davao Region. The others are Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental.

Davao City is the only independent city in the Davao Region. The city is geographically located in Davao del Sur but is independent from the province.

On June 30, 2016, Davao City native Jayvee Tyron Lim Uy assumed office as the governor of Compostela Valley. In 2018, he joined Hugpong ng Pagbabago, a political party formed by Sara Duterte.

On December 7, 2019, Compostela Valley was renamed Davao de Oro. On May 8, 2022, Uy turned 37 and on June 30, 2022, he will assume office as the vice governor of the province.

Formerly called Compostela Valley, Davao de Oro has 11 municipalities namely Compostela, Laak, Mabini, Maco, Maragusan, Mawab, Monkayo, Montevista, Nabunturan, New Bataan and Pantukan. The province has 237 barangays, 28 of which are in Nabunturan, the capital of the province.
