La Union is one of the four provinces in the Ilocos Region of the Philippines. The others are Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan.

San Fernando is the capital of La Union and the only component city of the province. The province also has 19 municipalities namely Agoo, Aringay, Bacnotan, Bagulin, Balaoan, Bangar, Bauang, Burgos, Caba, Luna, Naguilian, Pugo, Rosario, San Gabriel, San Juan, Santo Tomas ,Santol, Sudipen and Tubao.

Raphaelle “Rafy” Veronica Alviar Ortega David and her husband Kevin David are residents of San Fernando. She was born in the city to Francisco Ortega III and Vini Alviar.

On March 14, 2022, Rafy turned 25. On June 30, 2022, she will assume office as the governor of La Union, making her the first female governor of the province.

On June 9, 2019, Kimberle Penchon represented La Union at Binibining Pilipinas 2019 and competed against 39 other candidates at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She finished in the Top 25.

On October 25, 2020, Trizha Ocampo represented La Union at Miss Universe Philippines 2020 and competed against 45 other candidates at the Cordillera Convention Hall of Baguio Country Club in Baguio, Philippines. She was unplaced.
