The Supreme Court of the Philippines reverted the Dinagat Islands back to Surigao del Norte on May 18, 2010 then reversed its ruling on April 12, 2011. The separation of the two provinces was finalized on October 24, 2012.

There are seven municipalities in the Dinagat Islands namely Basilisa, Cagdianao, Dinagat, Libjo, Loreto, San Jose and Tubajon. Collectively, the municipalities have 100 barangays, 12 of which are in San Jose, the capital of the province.

Born in Cab-ilan, Dinagat, Ruben Edera Ecleo Sr. founded the Philippine Benevolent Missionaries Association, Inc. (PBMA) in 1965. The main office of the organization is in San Jose.
