2022 Siquijor congressman, governor, vice governor, board members elected
Siquijor, Philippines was once called Katugasan. Founded on September 17, 1971, the province was called the Isla del Fuego by the Spaniards during the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines from 1565 to 1898.
When the Negros Island Region of the Philippines was established on May 29, 2015, it only included the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental and the city of Bacolod. The region was abolished on August 9, 2017 and reestablished on June 11, 2024 with Siquijor added as one of its provinces.
With a total area of 337.49 square kilometers, Siquijor has six municipalities namely Enrique Villanueva, Larena, Lazi, Maria, San Juan and Siquijor. The municipalities collectively have 134 barangays, 42 of which are in the municipality of Siquijor, the capital of the province.
In 1920, Larena High School was founded in Larena by Vicente Villanueva, who served as the lieutenant governor of Siquijor from 1924 to 1928. It became Larena Sub‑Provincial High School in 1929, Larena National Vocational School in 1960, Larena National Vocational College in 1983 and Siquijor State College in 1983.
