Basilan, Philippines has two component cities namely Isabela and Lamitan and 11 municipalities namely Akbar, Al-Barka, Hadji Mohammad Ajul ,Hadji Muhtamad, Lantawan, Maluso, Sumisip, Tabuan-Lasa, Tipo-Tipo, Tuburan and Ungkaya Pukan. The province has 255 barangays, 45 of which are in its capital Lamitan.

Born in Buli-Buli, Sumisip, Hadjiman Sabbihi “Jim” Hataman Saliman served as the congressman of Basilan from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2016. He has been the governor of the province since June 30, 2016.

Also born in Buli-Buli, Saliman’s brother Mujiv Sabbihi Hataman has been the congressman of Basilan since June 30, 2019. Mujiv turned 49 on September 11, 2021.

Basilan is one of the five provinces in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). The others are Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur and Tawi-Tawi.

Isabela is the only part of Basilan that is not in the BARMM. The city is part of the Zamboanga Peninsula region.

On June 11, 2016, Aicha Francisco represented Isabela at Miss Philippines Earth 2016 and competed against 45 other candidates at the University of the Philippines Theater in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. She was unplaced.

Representing Basilan, Joshua Colet was one of the 72 contestants of “Tawag ng Tanghalan: Celebrity Champions”, which aired on ABS-CBN from October 7, 2019 to November 9, 2019. He is Noel Colet and Miss Basilan 1983 Jennifer Violet Alano‘s son.
