Quirino is one of the five provinces in the Cagayan Valley region of the Philippines. The others are Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya.
On February 10, 1972, Quirino was formally established as a province. It was named after Elpidio Rivera Quirino, who served as the president of the Philippines from April 17, 1948 to December 30, 1953.
Since June 30, 2019, Dakila Carlo “Dax” Enriquez Cua has been the governor of Quirino, a position he held from June 30, 2007 to June 30, 2010. He served as the vice governor of the province from June 30, 2001 to June 30, 2007 and the congressman of the province from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2019.
Cua was born in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. He turned 44 on November 4, 2018.

Quirino has six municipalities namely Aglipay, Cabarroguis, Diffun, Maddela, Nagtipunan and Saguday. These municipalities collectively have 132 barangays, 17 of which are in Cabarroguis, the capital of the province.
On August 8, 2021, Xyra Ballesteros represented Nagtipunan and Angel Keith Dizon represented Saguday at Miss Philippines Earth 2021 and competed against 64 other candidates in a virtual coronation ceremony. Ballesteros finished in the Top 20 while Dizon was unplaced.
