Dr. Chao Tiao New Yumol II, 38, of Lamitan, Basilan, Philippines is currently detained at Camp Karingal in Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines. With a caliber .45 pistol with silencer, the registered physician entered the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City on the afternoon of July 24, 2022.
Former Lamitan mayor Rosita Furigay was also inside the university that afternoon. With her executive assistant Victor George Capistrano, she was supposed to attend her daughter Hanna Rose Furigay‘s graduation from the university’s law school, which was scheduled at 4:00 p.m.
.
At around 2:55 p.m., Yumol opened fire in front of the university’s Areté building, fatally shooting Rosita, Capistrano and Jeneven Bandiola, a security guard of the university. Hannah was critically wounded and rushed to the hospital.
The graduation ceremony was cancelled and the university was placed on lockdown. After fleeing the scene and changing clothes, Yumol was arrested along Aurora Boulevard in Quezon City.
It was not the first time Yumol was arrested. He was previously accused of taking to social media to malign several Lamitan residents, including Rosita, her husband Roderick “Oric” Farugay and other local government unit workers.
On September 19, 2019, Judge Gregorio dela Peña III of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 12 in Zamboanga City, Philippines issued a warrant for Yumol’s arrest. The doctor allegedly violated Republic Act 10175 (Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012).
On September 24, 2019, Yumol voluntarily surrendered to police in Parang, Maguindanao, Philippines. He was charged with 26 counts of cybercrime.
Before midnight on December 11, 2020, Yumol was driving his car in Lunzuran, Zamboanga City with three passengers when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle. Fortunately, the bulletproof curtain hanging by his side saved him.
The gunmen were riding motorcycles. They are still unknown.
On January 6, 2021, Yumol went to the Office of the Ombudsman in Quezon City with Filipino League of Advocates for Good Governance (FLAG)-Maharlika members to file a graft and corruption charge against Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) commissioner Greco Belgica. According to the accusers, Belgica refused to act on a citizen complaint against Rosita and Oric, the then respective mayor and vice mayor of Lamitan.
Rosita served as the Lamitan mayor from 2013 until she was succeeded by Oric. He was elected on May 9, 2022 while she did run for any position.
