What Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s Brian Bourquard did to Washington’s Shanan Lynn Read in 2005

Brian Anderson Bourquard, 39, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States is a robotics executive. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Seattle University in Seattle, Washington, USA, a master’s degree in management from Grenoble Ecole de Management in Grenoble, France and a master’s degree and a PhD in agricultural economics from Purdue University West Lafayette, Indiana, USA.

Bourquard is accused of being involved in the murder of Shanan Lynn Read of Auburn, Washington. She died in 2005 at the age of 33.

Read and Bourquard knew each other. In August 2005, he allegedly wrote in his journal, “Shanan owes $4,000 to some people.”

“Unless she has it by Sunday, her daughter is dead and Anthony could lose his position,” Bourquard allegedly wrote. “All because Shanan f—-d off all the money. Where is the s—? She put it all on the line and now we’re all going to burn unless we see a miracle. Do we all die if Shanan doesn’t get the money.”

At the time, Bourquard, the late Anthony Marou Martinez, Oscar Cash Gonzales, now 34, and Brandon Michael Reeve, now 42, were involved in a theft ring. Sometimes, they forged financial documents together.

Weeks after writing that journal entry, Bourquard was with Read and Martinez in an apartment on Capitol Hill, Seattle. Inside the apartment, which Bourquard rented, Martinez allegedly used a metal pipe to beat Read over a perceived theft from a scam he and Bourquard were involved with.

Gonzales allegedly helped Martinez and Bourquard to stuff Read into a large Rubbermaid tote container with her head still intact and took the container to Bourquard’s parents’ cabin on Puget Sound in Kitsap County, Washington. Martinez and Bourquard used lye and other chemicals to hasten her decomposition, according to Reeve.

Two weeks later, when Read’s body became sufficiently decomposed, Bourquard allegedly went back to the cabin with Michael Thomason, sealed the container and pushed it into the water. Meanwhile, Reeve was tasked to sanitize the apartment where she was beaten, according to him.

On January 15, 2006, a boater found Read’s decomposed and decapitated body floating inside a Rubbermaid tote container near Blake Island, a Puget Sound island. In March 2006, her head was found in the same area.

Initially, authorities assumed Read had died of an overdose or poisoning. In 2008, her family finally convinced a detective that the death was a murder and Bourquard became a person of interest.

But Bourquard remained a free man until August 8, 2022 when he was arrested in Philadelphia. He was being held without bail to await extradition to Washington where he is expected to face first-degree murder charges.

On August 9, 2022, Reeve was arrested in Sarasota, Florida, USA and charged with second-degree murder while Gonzales was arrested in Riverside, California, USA and charged with first-degree murder. Thomason was previously convicted of unlawful disposal of human remains.
