Officially called the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia. The country is bordered by Myanmar and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Thailand to the west and southwest and Cambodia to the southeast.
Laos gained its independence from the United Kingdom on May 11, 1947 and from France on October 22, 1953. On December 14, 1955, Laos was admitted to the United Nations.
Thongloun Sisoulith, 76, is the incumbent and seventh president of Laos. He assumed office on March 22, 2021.
