Jason Follette, 56, of Gouldsboro, Hancock County, Maine, United States has been charged with one count of gross sexual assault. Other charges may be pending.
On August 11, 1996, Follette allegedly sexually assaulted a woman, then 21, in her apartment in Hancock, Hancock County, Maine. The Maine State Police collected deoxyribonucleic acid from an unidentified male from the apartment, which did not immediately lead to an arrest.
On August 2, 2002, evidence collected at the scene of the crime allowed the MSP to obtain a warrant for an unidentified male. No suspect was identified and the case went cold.
Earlier this year, the MSP tried to leverage advanced DNA testing and forensic genetic genealogy for the first time to identify the unknown suspect. Forensic DNA evidence was sent to Othram Inc., which is based in The Woodlands, Texas, USA.
The further investigative work by the MSP and the results of the DNA test by Othram Inc. identified Follette as the man who attacked the Hancock woman. On November 9, 2022, he was arrested without incident at a pier in Gouldsboro.
Follette was booked into the Hancock County Jail in Ellsworth, Hancock County. It is unclear if bail was set.
