In 1986, Portugal joined the European Economic Community, which later became the European Union. Bordered by Spain to the north and east and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south, Portugal is also a member of the United Nations, the Schengen Area and the Council of Europe.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, 74, is the incumbent and 20th president of Portugal. He assumed office on March 9, 2016.
