- On December 31, 1975, he and three other teenagers robbed a convenience store near St. Edward’s University in Austin, Travis County. Derly Ramirez, the store attendant, was shot in the back and was paralyzed. Convicted of aggravated robbery, he received a 20-year sentence.

- While on parole for his aggravated robbery conviction, he fatally strangled and sexually assaulted Kendra Page, 8, who was riding her bike near Langford Elementary School in Austin on January 3, 1982.
