Joseph Thomas Cannon, 79, of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, United States previously lived in Aspen, Colorado, USA and Cary, North Carolina, USA. He has lived in different parts of Virginia, USA including Yorktown and Newport News.

Aside from Camp Hill, Cannon has lived in other parts of Pennsylvania including Enola. On May 28, 2023, he drove a white Toyota 4-Runner sport utility vehicle at the Dorchester Wawa located at 3904 State Highway 47 in Maurice River Township, New Jersey, USA.

At around 12:20 p.m. that day, Cannon entered the Wawa restroom and offered a boy, 7, candy to leave with him, according to the New Jersey State Police. The elderly man was wearing a burgundy shirt and a pair of blue jeans.

The boy, who was waiting outside the bathroom for his mother, declined the invitation. Cannon allegedly grabbed the boy’s arm and attempted to physically remove the boy from the store.

After resisting and managing to break free from Cannon’s grasp, the boy ran to his mother who was using the female restroom. Cannon departed the Wawa in his white Toyota 4-Runner before the the boy’s family was able to locate him. 

On June 2, 2023, Cannon was arrested. He was booked into the Cumberland County Jail in Bridgeton, New Jersey.

The elderly man was charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child. It is a third-degree offense that carries a penalty of up to five years of incarceration.
