Ajike “AJ” Shantrell Owens of Ocala, Marion County, Florida, United States has died. She was 35.
Owens worked as a manager in the hospitality industry. She was a single mother of three boys and one girl.
One of Owens’ neighbors in Ocala is Susan Louise Lorincz, 58. Between January 2021 and May 2023, Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded about six times to calls concerning a feud between Owens and Lorincz.
In February 2022 and in April 2023, Lorincz called the authorities and accused Owens of opening her mailbox multiple times although no mail was missing. Lorincz also complained that Owens’ dog was on her property.
On June 2, 2023, Owens’ sons aged 12 and 9 played in field near Lorincz’s home. Lorincz became angry, yelled and threw a roller skate at the younger boy, who was struck in a toe.
When the two boys went to speak with Lorincz, she allegedly opened her door and swung an umbrella at the boys, who later told their mother what happened. Owens went to Lorincz’s house with the younger boy and repeatedly knocked on the front door while asking Lorincz to come outside.
Lorincz fired one shot through the front door, which hit Owens in her upper chest while Owens’ son was standing beside her. The mother of four was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
According to Lorincz, she acted in self defense. However, detectives established that her actions were not justifiable under Florida law.
On June 6, 2023, Ocala Police Department officers arrested Lorincz. She was booked into the Marion County Jail in Ocala and charged with manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault.
