Henri d’Ansleme, 24, of Paris, France is a devout Catholic and a university student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in management and philosophy. He is François d’Ansleme‘s son.

While on a walking tour of France’s cathedrals, Henri encountered Abdelmasih Hanoun, 31, a Syrian national with Swedish identity documents and a Swedish driving license. The latter is a devout Christian who served in the Syrian army during a civil war.

In 2013, Hanoun arrived Sweden. He married a Swedish woman he had met in Turkey.

In 2021, Hanoun’s then wife gave birth to their daughter. In October 2022, the couple divorced.

After Hanoun was refused Swedish citizenship twice, he legally entered France. He applied for asylum in France in November 2022.

In April 2023, Hanoun was granted asylum in Sweden. He stated he was a Syrian Christian at the time of his application.

On June 4, 2023, Hanoun’s application was rejected on the grounds that he already had refugee status in Sweden. Facing deportation, he was left to sleep rough in Annecy, France.

Carrying two backpacks, Henri saw Hanoun stabbing four children at a park in Annecy at around 9:45 a.m. on June 8, 2023. The victims are British girl Ettie Turner, 3, her French cousins Ennio and Alba, both 2, and Dutch baby Peter, 22 months.

Moreover, Hanoun injured two pensioners namely Youssouf, 78, and Manuel, 70. Youssouf was sitting on a bench by the park when he was stabbed by Hanoun.

Henri used one of his backpacks to block Hanoun then chased the assailant away while other witnesses tried to help the victims. The Syrian man carried a prayer book and a cross at the time of his arrest.

All four children stabbed by Hanoun underwent surgery for their life-threatening knife wounds. On June 10, 2023, Hanoun was presented before two examining judges at the Palais de Justice in Annecy and placed under formal criminal examination for attempted murder and rebellion with a weapon.
