A female veteran of the United States Army gave birth to a girl in 2020. On the afternoon of June 12, 2023, the woman and her daughter were in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA for an appointment.
After the appointment, the U.S. Army veteran was pushing her toddler in a stroller at the corner of Jay and Tillary streets in Brooklyn when they were approached by Lequasiah Lawrence, 25, a homeless woman. While holding a knife, Lawrence allegedly threatened the child.
“I went to get the knife out of her hand, and had to take off her wig to identify who she was,” the mother told PIX11 News. She was stabbed by Lawrence at least six times in her legs and chest.
But according to a construction worker who claimed to have witnessed the attack, Lawrence saw the mother yelling at her daughter. The construction worker told New York Post, “The other woman didn’t mind her business.”
“She was saying, ‘Why you screaming at the baby?’,” the construction worker said of Lawrence. “The woman with her baby said, ‘It’s none of your business.’ They started arguing.”
While wounded, the mother was able to get on a subway train headed to Jamaica, Queens, New York City. She was rushed to to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in Jamaica.
The U.S. Army veteran is in stable condition. Her daughter was uninjured.
On the evening of June 14, 2023, Lawrence was arrested. She was charged with attempted murder and assault, according to the New York City Police Department.
It was Lawrence’s first run-in with police. The name of the U.S. Army veteran she stabbed was not released.
