As a researcher, Matsoukas is interested in particulate systems, population balances and statistical thermodynamics. While at Penn State, he received several awards including the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award from the student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE).

Matsoukas enjoys playing the piano and hiking the woods in his free time. Here are 13 more things about him:

  1. From 1977 to 1983, he attended the National Technical University of Athens where he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
  2. From 1983 to 1989, he attended the University of Michigan where he earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering.
  3. From 1989 to 1990, he attended the UCLA where he earned his post-doctoral degree in chemical engineering.
  4. In 1991, he joined Penn State as a professor.
  5. In 2005, he received the AXE: Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2006, he received the Outstanding Teaching Award from Penn State Engineering Society.
  6. In 2009, he received the George W. Atherton Award for Excellence in Teaching.
  7. On October 2, 2012, Pearson published his book “Fundamentals of Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (International Series in the Physical and Chemical Engineering Sciences)“.
  8. He is in images from trail cameras in Rothrock State Forest, which is near State College, dating as far back as 2014. His North Face backpack is seen in the images, which depict him naked from the waist down, except for socks and shoes.
  9. On January 1, 2016, LTC published his book “Fundamentos de Termodinâmica para Engenharia Química“.
  10. In 2017, he received the Premier Teaching Award from the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society.
  11. On May 8, 2019, Springer published his book “Generalized Statistical Thermodynamics: Thermodynamics of Probability Distributions and Stochastic Processes (Understanding Complex Systems)“.
  12. On April 13, 2023, he was caught on camera committing sexual acts with his dog, a collie, near the restrooms at Rothrock State Forest. Park rangers identified him by his North Face backpack.
  13. He was 64 years old when park rangers served a search warrant on June 9, 2023 to him at his home in State College.
