Martha Jessenia Gutierrez-Serrano, 28, and her mother Marta Elizeth Serrano-Alvarado, 46, are residents of Boutte, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana, United States. They are originally from Honduras.
Serrano-Alvarado, who had been in the U.S. for a number of years, had an expired visa. In 2021, Gutierrez arrived in the U.S.
In June 2022, Serrano-Alvarado allegedly used a fraudulent passport and a fraudulent birth certificate from Honduras to enroll Serrano-Alvarado in Hahnville High School in Boutte. The daughter was on record as being 17 years old.
Gutierrez-Serrano was placed in the ninth grade. She already completed the entire 2022-2023 school year at Hahnville High School when school officials received a tip about her real age.
The officials immediately investigated Gutierrez-Serrano. On May 29, 2023, the officials relayed their findings to the authorities.
Gutierrez-Serrano and Serrano-Alvarado were both arrested. When interviewed by investigators, the daughter said she enrolled in Hahnville High School to learn the English language.
On June 13, 2023, Gutierrez-Serrano and Serrano-Alvarado were each charged with one count of injuring public records. If found guilty, they could face a prison term of up to five years or a $5,000 fine.
