Brandoniya Bennett lived in a townhouse at the Roseland Townhomes on Munger Avenue in Dallas, Texas, United States. She was born in 2010.
At around 5:30 p.m. August 14, 2019, Bennett was sitting on her couch inside her residence when gunfire erupted outside. That afternoon, wannabe rappers Tyrese Simmons, then 19, and Davonte Benton, then 19, and several people were involved in a fight next door to Bennett’s townhome.
Witnesses had to break up Benton and Simmons, who were arguing over lyrics Benton had written about them in their songs. After telling Benton he would return to shoot the place up, Simmons returned and opened fire into the townhome where Bennett was staying.
A bullet to the head instantly killed her. Bennett. Two police officers carried hrt to a squad car so they could try to get her to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas but she did not survive.
On August 14, 2019, Simmons turned himself into police. In October 2019, a grand jury in Dallas County, Texas found enough evidence to put Simmons and Benton on trial for the shooting death of Bennett.
In November 2019, Benton was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the murder. In December 2019, Simmons was granted bond and placed under house arrest.
At around 2:30 a.m. on May 28, 2023, Simmons tampered with his ankle monitor and fled. A warrant was issued for his arrest and his trial, which was set to start on June 5, 2023, was put on hold after he disappeared.
On June 22, 2023, Simmons was arrested after a standoff at the Sky Hotel in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. He is facing a life sentence on capital murder charges in Bennett’s death.
Currently, Simmons is being held at the Tulsa County Jail in Tulsa for resisting arrest and fugitive from justice charges. He will be extradited back to Dallas.
