Alexis Tovar’s mother Melissa Perez of San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas, United States has died. Perez was 46.
Perez lived in an apartment complex on Old Pearsall Road in San Antonio. She was fatally shot there allegedly by San Antonio Police Department officers Alfred Flores, Eleazar Alejandro and Nathaniel Villalobos.
Flores, who is a sergeant, is a 14-year veteran of the force while Alejandro is a five-year veteran of the force. Villalobos joined the San Antonio Police Department in 2021.
After midnight on June 23, 2023, Perez was having a mental health crisis. She allegedly cut wires through a fire alarm system to her apartment complex in San Antonio.
While speaking with the San Antonio Fire Department in the parking lot of the complex, Perez was contacted by the San Antonio Police Department. She gave her name, date of birth and apartment number.
San Antonio Police Department officers tried to get Perez to go toward their patrol car but she ran back to her apartment and locked the door. The officers tried to speak with her through an open window.
Perez allegedly reached for a glass candle and threw it at an officer who removed the screen door from the open window on the porch. The officer backed away and waited for more officers and a supervisor to arrive at the scene.
Villalobos, Alejandro and Flores were stationed at the back patio of the apartment where tried to coax Perez out of the apartment. She picked up a hammer, swung it from inside the apartment toward the officers and hit the window.
While still armed with the hammer, Perez went toward the window where she was hit at least twice as Villalobos, Alejandro and Flores fired at her. The officers forced their way inside the apartment and provided medical aid but she died at the scene.
Later that day, Villalobos, Alejandro and Flores were arrested, booked into the Bexar County Jail in San Antonio and suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. They were each charged with murder.
Bonds for the three police officers were set at $100,000 each. On June 24, 2023, they all made their bond and were released from the Bexar County Jail pending trial.
