On February 14, 2018, while in uniform as a Broward County Sheriff’s Office deputy, he was the only armed guard on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School campus when Nikolas Cruz, then 19, entered the school and opened fire on students and staff, murdering 17 people and injuring 17 others. While the shooting was going on inside the school, he stayed outside never entered the building.  
  4. On February 16, 2018, he was interviewed by Broward County detectives. He claimed that on February 14, 2018, during the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, he alerted the police, locked the school down and evacuated children in the courtyard.
  5. On February 22, 2018, 16th Broward County sheriff Scott Israel suspended him without pay. He later resigned and was fired retroactively.
  6. On June 4, 2019, he was arrested, booked into the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County and released after posting a $102,000 bond. He was charged with perjury, three counts of culpable negligence and seven counts of child neglect.
  7. On July 22, 2019, his attorney submitted a written plea of not guilty on his behalf.
  8. On May 22, 2022, he attended a motions hearing in his case at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale. 
  9. On May 22, 2023, Circuit Judge Martin Fein rejected his attorney Mark Eiglarsh’s request to delay the trial until August 2023. On June 7, 2023, the trial started.
  10. He was 60 years old when he was found not guilty on June 29, 2023 on three counts of culpable negligence and seven counts of child neglect.
