A man, 43, holding a passport from Tajikistan arrived at the Chișinău International Airport in Chișinău, Moldova from Istanbul, Turkey on June 30, 2023. When asked to outline his reasons for coming to Moldova, he became agitated.
The Tajik man’s name has yet to be released. He was denied entry to Moldova, according to the country’s government press secretary Daniel Voda.
While the man was being escorted and taken to a special area at the airport, he seized a gun from a border police officer and opened fire. A border guard and an airport security official were fatally shot and a third person was wounded.
Officers at the airport fired at the suspect, who received at least 10 gunshot wounds. He underwent surgery and was arrested.
Because of the shooting, flights in and out of the Chișinău International Airport were grounded. The building was immediately evacuated.
Currently, the Tajik man is in the custody of special forces. The names of the people he shot at the airport were not released.
