Nahel Merzouk was an Algerian-Moroccan teenager from Nanterre, France. His first name may also be spelled as Naël.

  1. Before he was born, his father left his mother Mounia Merzouk.
  2. He never met his father.
  3. Mounia raised him singlehandedly on the Pablo Picasso housing estate in Nanterre, France which is home to many immigrants. He is her only child.
  4. He was close to his maternal grandmother Nadia Merzouk.
  5. His dream was to become a mechanic.
  6. He worked as a pizza delivery boy in Nanterre.
  7. He attended the Lycée Louis-Blériot in Suresnes, France for six months and then stopped going to school.
  8. In 2020, he started playing on a rugby team that was part of the French association Ovale Citoyen. He was enrolled in the program, which helps integrate young people from troubled neighborhoods through sports.
  9. Between 2021 and 2023, he was subject to five police checks. Most of the stops involved either using false number plates or driving without a license or insurance and he once refused to comply with an order to stop.
  10. On June 27, 2023, he was pulled over by two male Paris Police Prefecture motorcycle officers for driving at high speed in a bus lane while he was driving a rental car. He had two passengers in the car and had no driver’s license on him. He was fatally shot by one of the officers.
  11. Public outcry over his fatal shooting evolved into protests and riots across France, which led to the arrests of more than 1,300 protesters. On June 29, 2023, France’s interior minister Gerald Darmanin deployed 1,200 riot police and gendarmes in and around Paris, France and later added 2,000 more.
  12. On July 1, 2023, he was buried at the Mont-Valérien cemetery park in the Muslim section in Nanterre.
  13. He died at age 17. Prior to his death, he was summoned to appear before a court for minors in September 2023.
