Alejandro Garcia-Villanueva, 29, of Sacramento, California, United States was at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on the evening of July 2, 2023. He watched a Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) Gold Cup match between Mexico and Qatar.
Wearing a green-colored Mexican national team soccer jersey, Garcia-Villanueva and multiple attendees were involved in a brawl in the stands during the match at around 8:47 p.m. During the fight, he allegedly stabbed another man.
The unnamed victim suffered a stab wound to the upper collarbone area. He is recovering in the hospital.
After stabbing the victim, Garcia-Villanueva fled from the scene. He was with a woman also wearing a green-colored Mexican national team soccer jersey.
A warrant was issued for Garcia-Villanueva’s arrest. On July 4, 2023, he was taken into custody at his residence in Sacramento.
The woman Garcia-Villanueva was with at Levi’s Stadium on July 2, 2023 did not commit a criminal offense, according to Santa Clara Police Department lieutenant Cuong Phan. She was not charged with any crime.
The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup started on June 24, 2023 and will end on July 16, 2023 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The match between Mexico and Qatar at Levi’s Stadium on July 2, 2023 was won by the latter.
The oldest among the 23 players of Qatar is midfielder Abdullah Marafee, 31. The youngest is Mahdi Salem, 19.
