Both Britney Spears, 41, and National Basketball Association player Victor Wembanyama, 19, were in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States on the evening of July 5, 2023. She was with her husband Sam Asghari, 29, and two others.
At around 8:30 p.m. that night, Spears, Asghari and their two companions were going to Catch restaurant in the ARIA Resort and Casino in Las Vegas when she saw Wembanyana also walking into the restaurant. She allegedly tapped Wembanyana on the shoulder to get his attention so his security guard Damian Smith, the director of team security for the the NBA team San Antonio Spurs, tried to protect him from her.
Later that day, Spears took to Instagram to explain what had happened between her and Wembanyama near the ARIA Resort and Casino. She said she just “simply tapped him on the shoulder” and Smith backhanded her “in the face without looking back in front of a crowd,” which nearly knocked her down and caused glasses off her face.
“I have yet to get a public apology from the player, his security or their organization,” Spears said of Wembanyama, Smith and the NBA. “I hope they will.”
On July 6, 2023, Wembanyama said he believes Spears grabbed him from behind during the encounter so Smith pushed her away. According to the NBA player, he was advised by security not to stop for anyone as he walked into Catch restaurant that evening.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a battery investigation at the restaurant that evening. Spears has filed a police report, claiming she was assaulted.
The officers who responded to the scene reviewed security camera footage showing Smith push Spear’s hand away. It was her hand that struck her face, not Smith’s, law enforcement sources told TMZ.
On June 22, 2023, the San Antonio Spurs selected Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. He will make his debut at NBA Summer League on July 7, 2023 when his team meets the Charlotte Hornets at the Thomas and Mac Center on the campus of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in Paradise, Nevada.
