Jelena Noura “Gigi” Hadid, 28, and her friend Leah Nicole McCarthy, 29, travelled from the United States to the Cayman Islands on July 10, 2023 via a private jet. When they arrived at the Owen Roberts International Airport General Aviation Terminal in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands, ganja and utensils used for the consumption of the drug were found in the two women’s luggage.

Hadid and McCarthy were arrested at the airport. They were booked into at the Royal Cayman Islands Detention Center in George Town, Cayman Islands for processing and later released on bail.

On July 12, 2023, Hadid and McCarthy appeared in the Summary Court in George Town. They both pleaded guilty to importation of ganja and importation of utensils used for the consumption of ganja.

Hadid and McCarthy were each fined $1,000. They avoided a recorded conviction.

Born in Los Angeles, California, USA to Mohamed Hadid, 74, and Yolanda Hadid, 59, Gigi graduated from Malibu High School in Malibu, California in 2013. After the graduation, Gigi moved to New York City, New York, USA to study criminal psychology at The New School in New York City.

In 2016, McCarthy graduated from Baruch College in New York City with a bachelor’s degree in international business. In the same year, the British Fashion Council named Hadid the International Model of the Year.
