Candace Owens, 34, is not a big fan of Jussie Smollett, 41, and Carlee Russell, 25. Both Smollett and Russell are accused of reporting crimes to the police that did not really happen.
Owens was born in New York City, New York, United States but raised in Stamford, Connecticut, USA. She claimed that on February 3, 2007, she received three racist death threat voice mail messages that were traced to a car in which 29th Stamford mayor Dannel Malloy‘s son was present.
With the help of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Connecticut, Owens’ family sued the Stamford Board of Education in federal court for not protecting her rights. In January 2008, her family received a settlement of $37,500 from the board.
On January 29, 2019, Smollett told the Chicago Police Department that two men in ski masks attacked him outside his apartment in Chicago, Illinois, USA, talked to him using racial and homophobic slurs, poured an unknown liquid on him and put a noose around his neck. Brothers Bola Osundairo and Ola Osundairo later claimed that they were paid and directed by him to stage the attack to get media attention.
On December 9, 2021, Smollett was found guilty of five of six counts of disorderly conduct for making false police reports. On March 10, 2022, Cook County Judge James Linn sentenced him to 30 months of felony probation with five months served in jail and ordered him to pay $120,106 in restitution to the city of Chicago and a $25,000 fine.
Russell lives in the house of her parents Carlos Rusell, 49, and Talitha Robinson Russell, 48, in Hoover, Alabama, USA. On July 13, 2023, Carlee searched on Google the words “how to take money from a register without being caught” at 1:03 a.m., “Birmingham bus station” at 2:13 a.m., “1-way ticket from Birmingham to Nashville July 13” at 2:35 a.m. and “Taken film about abduction” at 12:10 p.m.
Later that day, Carlee went missing after calling 911 to report a male toddler walking on I-459 South, a highway that runs south of Birmingham, Alabama. On July 15, 2023, she returned home in Hoover and told her parents and investigators she had been abducted.
On July 19, 2023, Hoover Police Department chief Nick Derzis announced that investigators have been unable to verify most of Carlee’s initial statement about her abduction claim. Owens is one of the people who believe Carlee’s abduction claim is fake.
For Owens, Carlee’s story is much worse than that of Smollett. Owens believes that Carlee should spend some time in prison for making a false report to the police.
“It was a community effort trying to find her,” Owens said of Carlee on her podcast. “People were scared. I mean she traumatized an entire nation with this story.”
