John Lamar Vance, 36, of Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana, United States was at an outdoor party at Willard and Hackley streets in Muncie on July 30, 2023. At around 1:14 a.m., he allegedly exchanged fire with another individual at the party, killing Joseph Elliott Bonner III, 30, of Muncie and wounding at least 19 others.
At around 4:00 p.m. on August 1, 2023, Muncie Police Department officers arrested Vance. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Marshals Service assisted with the arrest.
Vance was booked into the Delaware County Jail in Muncie. He was preliminarily charged on three felony counts.
Bond for Vance was set at $55,000. Evidence would be forwarded to Delaware County prosecutor Eric Hoffman‘s office for review and consideration of additional charges.
This is not the first time Vance was arrested. He has been convicted of crimes including dealing in cocaine or a narcotic drug, resisting law enforcement, unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, battery, domestic battery and false informing.
On May 13, 2011, Vance cut reserve officer William Young with a knife. On May 23, 2011, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department arrested Vance in Anderson, Madison County, Indiana.
At the time, Vance had an outstanding warrant from Delaware County for dealing cocaine and from Madison County for Class D felony battery of a police officer and Class A misdemeanor resisting arrest. In June 2014, he pleaded guilty to Class B felony unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
