Annika Marie Olson, 24, of Bonita Springs, Lee County, Florida, United States is 5’4″ tall. She weighs 90 pounds.
Before August 16, 2023, Olson and Norma Garcia did not know each other. Originally from Nicaragua, the latter only speaks Spanish.
That day, Lee County Sheriff’s Office were conducting an investigation at Imperial Parkway in Bonita Springs involving Garcia, who apparently had only Nicaraguan identification. She was selling merchandise in the median of Imperial Parkway, a violation of an ordinance in Lee County.
In September 2022, Garcia was deported from the U.S. According to Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies, she had been previously warned that selling merchandise in the roadway was prohibited.
While the deputies were investigating Garcia’s actions and identity, Olson was driving by the scene. Olson stopped her car in the driving lane on Imperial Parkway and approached the deputies.
Parked in the roadway, Olson’s car blocked the traffic lane and created a safety hazard for Garcia, herself, other motorists and the deputies. The deputies asked Olson to move her abandoned vehicle from Imperial Parkway but she refused.
Instead, Olson left her vehicle in the driving lane and interfered with the deputies’ investigation and Garcia’s arrest. Because of this, Olson herself was arrested.
Olson was charged with refusing to comply with police or firefighter’s lawful orders and resisting an officer without violence. On August 18, 2023, she was released after posting bond.
