Andrea Vasquez of Downey, Los Angeles County, California, United States has died. She was 19.
Vasquez was studying fashion design at Fullerton College in Fullerton, Orange County, California. She is Veronica Becerra‘s niece and Edlyn Vasquez‘s sister.
Just after midnight on August 20, 2023, Andrea and her boyfriend, 19, were sitting in a car in a parking stall at Penn Park in Whittier, Los Angeles County when a 2013 white Toyota Tacoma truck pulled up. Driving the truck was Gabriel Esparza, 20, of Whittier, who allegedly fired gunshots in Andrea and her boyfriend’s direction.
Andrea’s boyfriend ran to another couple in the park for help. When he returned, he found blood near the vehicle and Andrea was missing.
Hours later, Edlyn traced Andrea’s phone to a field just off the 10 Freeway in Moreno Valley, Riverside County, California. At the location, more blood were found but Andrea and her phone were missing.
At around 3:00 p.m. on August 21, 2023, Esparza was arrested at his job without incident and charged with murder and kidnapping. Police seized a firearm they believe he used to shoot Andrea and his 2013 white Toyota Tacoma truck.
At 11:50 p.m., Andrea was found dead in a field off Alessandro Boulevard and Merwin Street in Moreno Valley. On August 22, 2023, Esparza was being held without bail at the Whittier Police Jail in Whittier.
