Yohanes Stefanos Kidane of Rochester, New York, United States has died. He was 22.
Kidane was a computer scientist and a Netflix employee. He is Mehret Hana Beyene‘s son, Yosief Kidane‘s younger brother of Yosief Kidane and Sara Kidane‘s older brother.
Yohanes and his siblings were born and raised in Rochester. Their parents emigrated from Eritrea to the U.S.
In May 2019, Yohanes graduated from Webster-Schroeder High School in Webster, New York. In May 2023, he graduated from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York with a bachelor’s degree in computer science.
In July 2023, Yohanes moved to an apartment in San Francisco, California, USA. On August 7, 2023, he started his job as a software engineer at Netflix software engineer in Los Gatos, California.
Wearing gray sweatpants, a black hoodie and black shoes, Yohanes got into a black Toyota Camry sedan with an Uber sticker at 28 North Fourth Street in San Jose at around 7:15 p.m. on August 14, 2023. That was the last time he was seen alive.
On August 15, 2023, Yohanes did not show up for work. Later that day, a commuter from San Rafael, California found his phone and wallet near the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center in San Francisco and a San Jose Police Department officer found his backpack in a bush near the Golden Gate Bridge area.
On August 29, 2023, a passing boat found a body of a lifeless male floating in the water within the San Francisco Bay waters northeast of the Golden Gate Bridge. At around 11:41 a.m., the California Highway Patrol contacted the coroner division of the Marin County Sheriff’s Office about the body.
The U.S. Coast Guard – Station Golden Gate sector immediately responded to the provided area, located the body, recovered it from the water and transported it to Station Golden Gate in Sausalito, California to awaiting paramedics. At 11: 12 a.m., the subject was pronounced dead.
On August 31, 2023, the subject was identified as Yohanes. Based on the forensic postmortem examination completed on September 1, 2023, the cause of death was determined to be from blunt impact injuries with drowning as a significant contributing condition and the mode of death was determined to be suicide.
