Filenin Sultanlari finished the 33rd edition of the Women’s European Volleyball Championship on top. The women’s national volleyball team of Turkiye is coached by Daniele Santarelli, 42, of Italy.
Hosted in Belgium, Estonia, Germany and Italy, the tournament started on August 15, 2023. The championship match, which was between Filenin Sultanlari and its Serbian counterpart, was played in Brussels, Belgium on September 3, 2023.
The Serbian team won the first set 27-25 while Filenin Sultanlari won the second set 25-21. The third set was won by the Serbian team 25-22.
In the fourth set, Filenin Sultanlari bounced back by winning 25-22. The fifth set broke the tie with the Turkish team winning 15-13 and becoming the champion.
Also on September 3, 2023, the Netherlands’ team finished third and Italy’s team finished fourth. On August 30, 2023, the teams of the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Poland and France finished in the quarterfinals.
Governed by the Volleyball Federation of Serbia, the women’s national volleyball team of Serbia won the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) in 2018 and 2022. Its current head coach is Giovanni Guidetti, 50, of Italy.
The Women’s European Volleyball Championship was founded in 1949. It is organized by the Confédération Européenne de Volleyball (CEV), the governing volleyball body of Europe.
Formed by the Turkish Volleyball Federation, Filenin Sultanlari represents Turkey in international CEV and FIVB organizations. The team finished ninth at the 2012 Olympic Games and fifth at the 2020 Olympic Games.
