Novak Djokovic, Ben Shelton to fight for 2023 US Open men’s singles final spot in New York City

Novak Djokovic, 36, of Belgrade, Serbia and Ben Shelton, 20, of Gainesville, Florida, United States are still in the running towards becoming the 2023 U.S. Open men’s singles champion. It is the 143rd edition of the tennis tournament held annually in New York, USA.

Held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City, New York, the tournament started on August 28, 2023 and will end on September 10, 2023. Carlos Alcaraz, 20, of Villena, Spain is the defending champion in men’s singles.

Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev, 26, of Hamburg, Germany are competing for a spot in the semifinals. One more spot is for the winner between Russian quarterfinalists Daniil Medvedev, 27, and Andrey Rublev, 25.

In the 2023 U.S. Open men’s singles, Djokovic defeated Alexandre Müller, 26, of Poissy, France in the first round, Bernabé Zapata Miralles, 26, of Valencia, Spain in the second round, Laslo Djere, 28, of Senta, Serbia in the third round and Borna Gojo, 25, of Split, Croatia in the fourth round. In the quarterfinals, Djokovic defeated Taylor Fritz, 25, of Rancho Santa Fe, California, USA.

Djokovic won the U.S. Open men’s singles in 2011, 2015 and 2018. He also won the men’s singles of the 2023 Australian Open on January 29, 2023 and the 2023 French Open on June 11, 2023.

Ben Shelton

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Shelton is tennis coach Bryan Shelton and former junior tennis player Lisa Witsken Shelton‘s son. Ben’s sister Emma Shelton played college tennis.

The 2023 U.S. Open marks Ben’s second Grand Slam semifinal placement. In January 2023, he finished in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Australian Open men’s singles after losing to Tommy Paul.

In the 2023 U.S. Open men’s singles, Ben defeated Pedro Cachin, 28, of Cordoba, Argentina in the first round, Dominic Thiem, 30, of Lichtenwörth, Austria in the second round, Aslan Karatsev, 30, of Moscow, Russia in the third round and Tommy Paul, 26, of Boca Raton, Florida in the fourth round. In the quarterfinals, Ben defeated Frances Tiafoe Jr., 25, of Orlando, Florida.
