Ivan Gustavo Hernandez-Cabral, 24, of Mexico was arrested by the United States Marshals Service while he was awaiting his hearing on an illegal entry charge in federal court in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. He was wanted out of Mexico for his involvement in the massacre nine U.S. citizens in Sonora, Mexico on November 4, 2019.
That day, La Linea cartel gunmen opened fire on three sports utility vehicles on a road in Sonora. Inside the SUVs were three women namely Christina Langford, Rhonita Miller and Dawna Ray and 11 children who were headed to a wedding.
The victims lived in the area. They had ties to LeBaron, an independent Mormon colony in Chihuahua, Mexico.
The three women and six of the children were fatally shot. The remaining children survived the shooting.
All of the victims were dual citizens of Mexico and the U.S. They were mistaken by La Linea for members of its rival Sinaloa cartel cell called Los Salazar.
Hernandez-Cabral is accused of being involved in the shooting. By February 2021, around 20 suspects were arrested in the case while more warrants remain outstanding.
On July 27, 2023, Hernandez-Cabral and seven other individuals illegally crossed the border near Columbus, New Mexico. They were caught by the U.S. Border Patrol and arrested for illegal entry.
On September 4, 2023, the U.S. Marshals Service took Hernandez-Cabral into custody in Albuquerque. He is represented by Carlos Ibarra of Las Cruces, New Mexico.
