Fred Mario Cain III, 69, of Central Point, Jackson County, Oregon, United States previously lived in Fernley, Nevada, USA. He has lived in different parts of California, USA including Martinez, Pacheco and Pleasant Hill.
Aside from Central Point, Cain has lived in other parts of Oregon including Shady Cove and Eagle Point. He is accused of killing Jeremy Stoner in 1987.
Jeremy Stoner
On February 21, 1987, Stoner was reported missing from a relative’s residence in Vallejo, Solano County, California. On February 25, 1987, he was found naked and dead on Sherman Island in Sacramento County, California.
Stoner was sexually assaulted, strangled and stabbed. Initially, Shawn Melton, a man who penned an autobiography that included graphic details of raping children, was named a suspect.
Melton appeared to know specific details about Stoner’s death. In 1988, a jury acquitted Melton of child molestation and hung on the murder charge.

In 2022, the Solano County District Attorney’s cold case unit took a new look at the case involving Stoner’s murder. Melton was exonerated by new deoxyribonucleic acid technology, which identified Cain as the suspect in the case.
On September 18, 2023, Cain was arrested at his residence in Central Point. He waived extradition.
Cain is expected to be transferred to Solano County soon. He will be charged with murder with a special circumstance of kidnapping and sodomy.
