Moses K. Johnson, 63, of Huntington, Suffolk County, New York, United States is accused of stealing his mother’s public pension payments. After working in Huntington’s recycling center for more than three decades, he retired in 2017.
On April 16, 2021, Johnson’s mother died. Neither the bank nor the New York State and Local Retirement System was notified of her death.
Johnson himself is a member of the state retirement system. He is aware of the pension process and the fact that his mother’s payments should have been stopped with her death.
Despite this, between April 30, 2021 and June 30, 2022, Johnson allegedly collected 15 unauthorized payments totaling $56,411.37, which were traced from his mother’s bank account into his bank account. He allegedly spent the stolen funds.
On October 11, 2023, investigators of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office arrested Johnson. Before Suffolk County District Court Judge Anna Acqafredda, he was arraigned for second-degree grand larceny.
Acqafredda released Johnson on his own recognizance during the pendency of the case. On October 25, 2023, he will be back in court.
